An invitation · Hall & Mirrors

Before the cast,
the room.
Before the room,
the writing.
Before the writing,
the table.

We are not casting yet. We are reading the work out loud, in small NYC rooms, with the actors and theater-makers who recognize it. The table is open.

What is happening now

Reads, not auditions.

Hall & Mirrors is gathering performers, directors, and theater-makers around the Meanwhile library. We meet in small groups in New York. We read pieces out loud. We sit with the writing. We talk about what it asks of the people who would say it.

These are not auditions. There are no sides, no callbacks, no decisions made about you in your absence. They are reads. The work is alive in the room because everyone in the room is committed to it being alive.

When Meanwhile mounts, the cast will emerge from this table. That is the design. The room precedes the production.

Who we are looking for

Performers who recognize the writing.

Meanwhile asks for actors who can hold a room with one person in it. Language-first work, performed close enough that the audience feels the words land. Tony Kushner intensity in fifteen-minute pieces. Adult, literary, exact.

Performers

Actors and the actor-adjacent.

Stage actors with intimate-room experience. Performance artists, monologists, spoken-word artists who treat language as a craft. Anyone who can carry a fifteen-minute piece for one or two people without flinching.

Reps

Casting directors, agents, managers.

If you have actors on your roster who would recognize this work, bring them. The room is open to the people who place actors as well as the actors themselves.

Theater-makers

Directors, dramaturgs, designers.

The Meanwhile format is open. Directors who work intimately, dramaturgs who love language, designers who build for small rooms. Come read. Come listen. Come build.

How to come to the table

A short note. That is all.

Send a brief note. Tell us who you are, what pulled you toward the work, and link a reel or sample if you have one. Or do not, if you do not. The note is enough to start.

We invite. We do not process applications. The table is small. We respond when there is a read that fits.

“We want people to be able to act these plates. We want people to be able to explore this structure. We are committed to what this is as a form of art and we think that that takes a community.”
